An artist who creates evocative music that transports you to a new universe
I had the pleasure of interviewing Jeremy Warner to discuss his musical journey, from dropping his first EP on Spotify in 2019 to creating video game music for Game Jams today. Jeremy is open and contemplative, absorbing and learning from his environment and letting it influence his sound. His music invites listeners to step away from the mundane and give in to curiosity. So let’s travel back to 2019 to explore his early works.
-Past-
On May 4, 2019, Jeremy, under the artist name Rubber Insect, released an EP titled Back in the Water. This vocal debut uses software synths to document the process of moving on from a breakup. He always was musically inclined, but the breakup created a wave of external pressure that pushed him to finish and release the project. The EP explores several themes. The track Naga, for example, represents overcoming infatuation and accepting the breakup. Many songs also reference insects and water, influenced by Jeremy’s interest in biology. The tracks are raw and dreamy, filled with a youthful nostalgia. Like the inspiration behind the name Rubber Insect, the music feels playful yet resilient. They represent what once was, being accepting and proud of the journey.
During the Covid lockdown, Jeremy discovered hardware synths and felt drawn to the physical experience of creating music.
I feel like I’m playing an instrument again.
As he moved away from vocals, his music became an expression of his ear and instinct, with every small decision on the hardware building into something larger. Around this time, he also began experimenting with visual synthesizers, enjoying how the music warped and flowed across his screen. Wanting a platform to share this artistic combination, he created his YouTube channel, Jerebee. The live scores he posts are groovy and fun. Although he sometimes fears being repetitive, that fear pushes him to take risks. His live sessions capture sounds that may never happen again, and one piece that highlights this is Meander.
-Present-
Jeremy and his channel Jerebee are quickly growing in the world of video game music, a niche he has embraced in recent years. He finds it practical and profitable, but also deeply fulfilling.
Video game music has a purpose. It is a collection of mood, vibe, and art style. It pushes you into new genres and out of your comfort zone.
A big part of his work comes from participating in Game Jams. After months of competing, he learned it is enough to create and let go.
Art does not have to take forever.
The beauty of his video game music is that you do not need to be a gamer to feel the emotion in his work. His portfolio album includes tracks like Desolate Dunes and Moonglow Manor, which convey isolation, gloom, and adrenaline. Listening to his pieces, I felt immersed in an out-of-body journey through mythical lands. You can venture on your own journey in the link below.
-Future-
Jeremy’s artistic journey began early, with a long stint in school band, but his creativity extends beyond music to comics and visual art. Over time, he has reflected deeply on the creative process, particularly on what he calls “the Gap”, the distance between the art you want to create and the skill you currently have. He spent years comparing his abilities to his taste and currently sees himself gradually closing that gap. This motivates him to keep growing in music. Jeremy also believes an artist’s perception of their own work is often distorted. While creators notice every flaw and can become trapped in perfectionism, viewers experience the art as a whole and can appreciate it freely.
Looking ahead, Jeremy plans to explore strange synth sounds and psychedelic tones while reintroducing vocals into his music. He wants to expand his YouTube channel, bring more people into his world, and let his humor shine through.
I want my music to feel like myself.
For him, music is a place where expression pours out, an outlet for deep emotions and a way to access joy. Explore his work in the profile links below to share in the unabashed outpour of creativity it represents.
