A vulnerable account of life in North Korea as an English teacher for the elite, this book is one of the few outsider books to personalize a glimpse into North Korea (similar to Not Forgotten by Kenneth Bae). This book, without me realizing, has become a comfort read. It reflects the frustration and natural adaptation to mundanity, self censorship, and deception. It shows the conflict of how you can be fond of someone and simultaneously dismayed by them for things they can’t control. It reflects the insatiable need for contact from someone, anyone, that still fails to satiate an inner emptiness. This book, and Suki Kim, is selfish and yet extremely brave and sacrificial. I highly recommend you give it a read.
