Spirit Run – Noé Álvarez

By

This was a true coming of age story and an exploration of generational trauma and identity. I found the author’s writing moving and especially relevant in today’s climate, where minority communities face discrimination and ICE raids. Sadly, what stood out to me most though was the abuse and disorganization surrounding the Peace and Dignity run. While it is not my place to judge, I could not help but question how a prayer run like this can be ethical when participants are forced to drop out due to severe injury, death, abuse, and more. That aspect broke my heart, as it seems to conflict with the very purpose of the run. I wish the lasting impression had been one of healing and empowerment, but instead, I am left grappling with the harm that was allowed to persist.
